One of the most important telescopes in the history of astronomy, the Hubble Telescope has allowed observers to travel farther into space than any previous telescope.
Moving outside and above the Earth's atmosphere, the Hubble telescope has been able to see visual data more clearly than a terrestrial telescope, and it has since these spectra been far into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum Is able to see.
Is largely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Thus, by moving the observing platform into open space, the Hubble Telescope has given a more clear view of the universe, allowing scientists to look even deeper into space.
The Hubble Telescope is named after Edwin Hubble, the astronomer who originally determined that the universe was expanding. This discovery, one of the foundations of modern astronomy and cosmology, made Hubble an excellent choice for the honor of naming this telescope.
The concept for the Hubble telescope was originally conceived in 1946 by Liman Spitzer. He clearly saw that Earth-based telescopes were limited in their ability to see in the sky since dust, clouds, and even turbulence in the atmosphere, as well as the clarity of the telescope interfering with the atmosphere.
Which meant that the best way to get a clear image from a telescope is to have a telescope that was in orbit around the Earth.
After some success with the small orbital astronomical observatory, the plan for large-scale telescopes was born.
However, there were some hiccups and starts, mostly due to budget constraints, and the project did not actually take off until 1970 and funding was not approved until 1978. However, due to various delays, it was not actually launched until 1990.
However, it is not just astronomers who are amazed at the images produced by the Hubble Telescope. In fact, Hubble's pictures are a delight to be seen by all on their own.
From images of nebulae, to clearly defined galaxies, to the Apollo 15 landing site, Hubble has been as exciting to the public as it has been to scientists.
